Obolus

A nightly register of hauntings

Anything you need to ask.

The questions that come up most, answered plainly, and then the privacy policy in full. If neither settles it, write to me. One person reads that address and it is me.

Usually answered within two days. For a print, quote the order number from your receipt, the one beginning “No.”, and I can find it straight away.

Common questions.

I can only read one case. Where are the others?

That is the app working as intended. One case is issued each night at midnight, and the rest stay sealed until their turn. You cannot read ahead, and nothing you do will hurry it. Thirty cases, thirty nights. If you miss a night the case waits for you; the backlog does not expire.

I bought Volume II and it has not appeared.

Open Holder, then Standing orders, and tap Restore purchases. This re-checks your Apple ID and unlocks anything you own. The same button sits at the foot of the Volume II page. If it reports nothing to restore, check you are signed in with the Apple ID you bought it on, then write to me.

I have a new phone. Do I lose the Register?

Your purchases come back with Restore purchases. Your entered plates, your signature and your holder’s card live on the device itself, so they travel only if you restored the new phone from a backup. There is no account, which is the trade: nothing of yours sits on a server, and nothing of yours syncs.

Where is my print?

Prints are made to order. Reckon on two to five working days at the press, then post: a few days inside the United Kingdom, up to a fortnight to the United States. A tracking number reaches you by email when it ships, and the order screen in the app shows the same thing. If a fortnight passes with no tracking, write to me.

My print arrived damaged, or wrong.

Send a photograph to the address above with your order number. A print that arrives bent, marked or wrongly made is replaced, and you do not need to return the first one.

Do you post outside the UK and the US?

Not yet. The price includes postage to those two countries and the checkout refuses any other address rather than taking your money and discovering the problem at the press. More countries will follow.

Refunds.

Volume purchases are handled by Apple, not by me, so a refund is requested at reportaproblem.apple.com. Prints are mine: write to me before it goes to press and I will cancel and refund in full. After it has been printed I can only replace a fault.

The narration stops when I lock the screen.

It should not. Check that the phone is not on silent, that Obolus is not paused in the Control Centre, and that Low Power Mode is off. If it persists, tell me which iPhone and which version of iOS.

Remove my details.

Write to me and I will delete your order record. Everything else the app knows about you already lives only on your phone, and deleting the app takes it with it.

Privacy policy

What Obolus keeps.

Almost nothing, and none of it for its own sake. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking of any kind. The app carries no third-party software that watches what you do. This page is the whole policy, not a summary of one.

What stays on your phone

Your name, your signature, which cases you have entered, the findings you gave and your holder’s card are written to your device and nowhere else. They are never sent to me or to anyone. Delete the app and they are gone, including from my reach, because they were never within it.

What leaves your phone, and only then

Ordering a print is the one moment anything is transmitted. To make and post it, the app sends the delivery name and address you typed, your email address, and which plate and size you chose. Nothing else is sent, and nothing is sent at all if you never order a print.

Who else sees it

  • Stripe takes the payment on their own page. Your card details are entered there and never pass through the app or through me. I see only that a payment succeeded.
  • Prodigi print and post the plate, so they receive the delivery address, as any printer would.
  • Cloudflare host the small service that carries the order between the two.
  • Apple handle volume purchases entirely. I never see your Apple ID, your name or your payment details.

How long it is kept

An order record, your address, email, plate and order number, is held for one year so that a receipt can be found and a problem put right, then deleted automatically. Ask sooner and I will delete it sooner.

Notices at midnight

If you ask to be told when a case is issued, the reminder is scheduled by iOS on the phone itself. No server sends it and nobody, including me, knows whether you opened it.

Children

Obolus is rated 12+ and is not directed at children. It collects nothing from anyone knowingly, of any age, beyond a delivery address freely given for a print.

Your rights

Under UK and EU data protection law you may ask for a copy of what is held about you, ask for it corrected, or ask for it deleted. Write to the address below and it will be done. There is very little to send, which is the point.
